About Albuterol
What is this medication?
Albuterol is a prescription medication classified as a short-acting beta-agonist that functions as a bronchodilator. It is primarily used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in individuals diagnosed with reversible obstructive airway diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. By relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding the airways, the medication helps to open the bronchial tubes and increase airflow to the lungs, making it significantly easier for the patient to breathe.
This medication is most frequently administered through a metered-dose inhaler or a nebulizer solution for the rapid relief of acute symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Because of its fast-acting nature, it is often categorized as a rescue or quick-relief medicine that should be kept on hand for sudden respiratory distress. In addition to treating unexpected flare-ups, healthcare providers may also prescribe it for use shortly before physical activity to help prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
