About ANIMAL ANTIGEN
What is this medication?
Animal antigen is a prescription extract derived from the dander, hair, or skin cells of specific animals. It is primarily used as a diagnostic tool to identify whether an individual has an allergy to a particular animal, such as a cat, dog, or horse. During a skin prick test, a healthcare provider applies a small amount of the antigen to the skin to observe for a physical reaction, which helps confirm the source of an individual's allergic symptoms.
In addition to its use in testing, animal antigen is also employed in allergen immunotherapy, which is often referred to as allergy shots. This treatment involves administering gradually increasing amounts of the antigen to a patient over an extended period. The goal of this therapy is to desensitize the immune system to the specific animal proteins, thereby reducing the severity of allergic symptoms or potentially preventing them altogether when the patient is exposed to the animal in the future.
