About Annovera

What is this medication? Annovera is a prescription contraceptive vaginal ring used to prevent pregnancy in females of reproductive potential. It is a long-lasting, reversible birth control method that contains two types of hormones: a progestin called segesterone acetate and an estrogen called ethinyl estradiol. These hormones work together primarily by preventing ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovaries. Additionally, the medication changes the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus to make it harder for sperm to reach an egg or for a fertilized egg to implant.

Unlike other vaginal rings that are replaced every month, a single Annovera ring is designed to provide birth control for an entire year, covering thirteen 28-day cycles. The user inserts the flexible ring into the vagina and leaves it in place for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day break during which the ring is removed, washed, and stored in its provided case. It is important to follow the specific schedule for insertion and removal to ensure maximum effectiveness. This medication does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.
