About Avonex, Avonex Pen, AVONEX

What is this medication?

Avonex, including the Avonex Pen, is a prescription medicine used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. This includes treatment for clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It contains interferon beta-1a, which is a protein that is similar to the interferon produced naturally by the human body. The medication works by modulating the immune system's response, helping to reduce the inflammation that attacks the protective covering of the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.

The primary goal of using this medication is to decrease the frequency of clinical relapses and to delay the progression of physical disability associated with MS. It is typically administered once a week as an intramuscular injection. While it is not a cure for multiple sclerosis, it is a long-term therapy designed to manage the condition by slowing the accumulation of physical limitations and reducing the number of flare-ups experienced by the patient.
