About Betadine

What is this medication?

Betadine, which contains the active ingredient povidone-iodine, is a broad-spectrum antiseptic primarily used for the prevention and treatment of skin infections. It functions by slowly releasing iodine to eliminate a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In clinical environments, it is most often used as a skin preparation before surgical procedures to ensure the site is sterile and to minimize the chance of infection during and after the operation.

Beyond its use in surgical settings, this medication is applied to minor injuries such as small cuts, abrasions, and shallow burns to keep the area free of harmful microbes. It is produced in various forms, including topical solutions, surgical scrubs, ointments, and swabs, to suit different medical needs. Users should apply it only to the skin and consult a healthcare professional if they experience persistent irritation or if the wound is deep or serious.
