About Carafate
What is this medication?
Carafate, also known by its generic name sucralfate, is a prescription medication primarily used to treat and prevent active duodenal ulcers. Unlike many other digestive medications that focus on reducing or neutralizing stomach acid, Carafate works by providing a physical layer of protection for the lining of the small intestine. When the medication enters the stomach, it reacts with gastric acid to create a thick, paste-like substance that adheres specifically to the site of an ulcer.
By binding to the ulcer, the medication forms a protective barrier that shields the damaged tissue from further irritation caused by stomach acid, pepsin, and bile salts. This allows the ulcer to heal more effectively while preventing new ulcers from developing in the same area. It is typically prescribed to be taken on an empty stomach several times a day as directed by a healthcare professional to ensure the protective coating remains intact and functional.
