About Cefixime
What is this medication?
Cefixime is a prescription antibiotic belonging to the group of drugs known as cephalosporins. It is primarily used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which ultimately causes the bacteria to die. Doctors commonly prescribe this medication to address respiratory issues such as bronchitis, as well as infections of the throat and tonsils like pharyngitis. Because it is an antibiotic, it is only effective against bacteria and will not work for viral illnesses such as the flu or the common cold.
In addition to respiratory tract infections, Cefixime is frequently used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections and middle ear infections, particularly in children. It is also a common treatment for certain sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea. To ensure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it is essential for patients to finish the entire course of the medication exactly as prescribed by their healthcare provider, even if symptoms begin to improve after a few days.
