About Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension
What is this medication? Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension is a prescription medication primarily used to lower high levels of cholesterol in the blood, specifically low-density lipoprotein or LDL. It belongs to a class of drugs known as bile acid sequestrants. By reducing cholesterol, this medication helps decrease the risk of heart disease and helps prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries. In addition to managing cholesterol, this medication is also prescribed to relieve intense itching caused by a blockage in the bile ducts, a condition known as partial biliary obstruction. It works by binding with bile acids in the digestive tract, which prevents them from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream. The body then eliminates these acids through stool, prompting the liver to use up existing cholesterol to produce more bile acids, thereby lowering overall cholesterol levels.
