About Colestid
What is this medication? Colestid, which contains the active ingredient colestipol, is a prescription drug categorized as a bile acid sequestrant. Its primary clinical use is to reduce high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, often referred to as bad cholesterol, in the bloodstream. By lowering these cholesterol levels, the medication assists in preventing the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, which reduces the long-term risk of cardiovascular issues such as heart disease and strokes. It is most effective when combined with a low-fat diet and regular physical activity.
The drug functions by binding to bile acids within the intestines, forming a complex that is then eliminated from the body through bowel movements. Because the liver requires cholesterol to produce new bile acids, this process prompts the liver to pull more cholesterol from the blood, thereby lowering overall levels. Beyond cholesterol management, Colestid is sometimes used to treat chronic diarrhea caused by an excess of bile acids. Patients are generally advised to take other medications several hours apart from Colestid to ensure that their absorption is not hindered by the binding process.
