About Colistimethate
What is this medication?
Colistimethate is an antibiotic medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as polymyxins. It is primarily used to treat serious infections caused by specific types of Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. This medication is often reserved for cases where other antibiotics have failed or when the bacteria causing the infection are resistant to more common treatments, making it a critical tool in managing multidrug-resistant conditions.
The medication is typically administered through an injection into a vein or muscle, though it can also be used as an inhaled treatment for individuals with chronic lung conditions like cystic fibrosis. It works by disrupting the cell membrane of the bacteria, which ultimately leads to their destruction. Because it carries a risk of side effects affecting the kidneys or nervous system, it is only available with a prescription and is usually administered under the close supervision of a healthcare professional in a clinical setting.
