About CP2D
What is this medication? CP2D, which stands for Citrate Phosphate Double Dextrose, is a specialized anticoagulant and preservative solution used primarily during the collection of whole blood. Its main function is to prevent blood from clotting after it has been drawn from a donor, ensuring that the blood remains in a liquid state suitable for processing or transfusion. By inhibiting the coagulation cascade, the solution protects the physical integrity of the blood components throughout the collection process. This medication contains specific concentrations of sodium citrate, citric acid, monobasic sodium phosphate, and a high amount of dextrose. The double dextrose formulation provides an essential energy source for red blood cells, which helps maintain their viability and metabolic function during refrigerated storage. Additionally, the phosphate acts as a buffer to stabilize the pH levels of the blood, ultimately extending the useful shelf life of the collected units for medical use.
