About Cytotec
What is this medication?
Cytotec is a brand name for the medication misoprostol, which is a synthetic prostaglandin. Its primary FDA-approved purpose is to prevent the formation of stomach ulcers in patients who regularly take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These types of pain relievers can weaken the protective lining of the stomach, and Cytotec works by replacing the protective substances that NSAIDs inhibit, while also reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Beyond its use for gastrointestinal health, Cytotec is widely used in the field of obstetrics and gynecology for various off-label purposes. It is commonly used to induce labor or to soften the cervix before certain medical procedures. Additionally, because it can cause uterine contractions, it is used for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage and in the process of medical termination of pregnancy. Due to these effects on the uterus, the medication carries a serious warning against use by pregnant women for ulcer prevention, as it can cause birth defects, premature birth, or miscarriage.
