About DIPHENOXYLATE HYDROCHLORIDE AND ATROPINE SULFATE
What is this medication? This combination medication is primarily used as an adjunctive therapy for the management of diarrhea in adults and children aged thirteen and older. Diphenoxylate hydrochloride is the active ingredient that functions as an antidiarrheal agent by slowing down the movement of the intestines. This decrease in bowel activity allows the body to absorb more fluid and electrolytes, which helps to firm up the stool and reduce the frequency of bowel movements.
Atropine sulfate is included in this formulation in a very small dose specifically to discourage the misuse or overdose of the medication. Because diphenoxylate is chemically related to narcotic pain relievers, the addition of atropine causes unpleasant side effects if someone attempts to take more than the recommended amount. This medication should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider and is typically intended for short-term relief rather than the treatment of underlying chronic conditions.
