About Disulfiram
What is this medication? Disulfiram is a prescription medication primarily used to support the treatment of chronic alcoholism by acting as a physical deterrent to drinking. It works by interfering with the body's normal metabolism of alcohol, specifically by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde. When a person taking this medication consumes even a small amount of alcohol, acetaldehyde levels rise in the bloodstream, leading to a highly unpleasant physical reaction. This reaction typically includes symptoms such as severe nausea, vomiting, chest pain, headache, and intense flushing of the face and neck. The medication is intended to be used alongside behavioral therapy, counseling, and support groups rather than as a standalone cure for alcohol use disorder. It does not reduce the psychological urge to drink, but the knowledge of the physical illness it induces helps many individuals maintain their commitment to abstinence. Because the reaction can be severe, patients must be carefully screened and must avoid all forms of alcohol, including hidden sources found in certain foods, mouthwashes, and topical products. It is essential that the individual has not consumed any alcohol for at least twelve hours before beginning the treatment to ensure safety.
