About DIURIL
What is this medication?
Diuril is a prescription medication known generically as chlorothiazide, which belongs to a class of drugs called thiazide diuretics. Commonly referred to as a water pill, this medication helps the body eliminate excess salt and water by increasing the amount of urine produced by the kidneys. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, which helps prevent serious medical complications such as strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
In addition to managing blood pressure, Diuril is frequently prescribed to reduce edema, which is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body tissues. This fluid buildup is often associated with underlying medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or various kidney disorders. The medication is sometimes used to treat fluid retention caused by certain other drugs, such as steroids or estrogens, and can be administered to both adults and children depending on the clinical need.
