About E-Z-Paste

What is this medication? E-Z-Paste is a prescription medication that contains barium sulfate, which serves as a radiopaque contrast agent. It is primarily utilized during medical imaging procedures, such as X-rays or fluoroscopy, to help healthcare professionals examine the gastrointestinal tract. When a patient swallows the paste, it coats the inner lining of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine. This coating allows these structures to appear clearly on diagnostic images because the barium effectively blocks the passage of X-rays.

This specific paste formulation is frequently used for studies focusing on the upper digestive system, particularly the pharynx and esophagus. It is especially helpful for evaluating swallowing disorders or detecting various structural abnormalities such as ulcers, tumors, or blockages. Since barium sulfate is not absorbed into the bloodstream, it remains within the digestive tract until it is naturally eliminated from the body through bowel movements.
