About FILSUVEZ
What is this medication? Filsuvez is a prescription topical gel used to treat partial-thickness wounds in adults and pediatric patients six months of age and older who have specific types of epidermolysis bullosa. This medication is specifically indicated for those living with junctional epidermolysis bullosa and dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. These are rare genetic conditions that cause the skin to be extremely fragile, leading to frequent blistering and painful open sores from even minor friction or contact.
The active ingredient in this gel is a botanical extract derived from birch bark, which contains naturally occurring compounds called triterpenes. When applied to the skin during regular dressing changes, the medication helps to promote the healing of chronic wounds associated with the disease. It represents a significant advancement as the first treatment approved to specifically target the skin wounds caused by these forms of epidermolysis bullosa, providing a new option for managing skin integrity.
