About Fioricet
What is this medication? Fioricet is a combination prescription drug primarily used to treat complex tension headaches. It contains three active ingredients: acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine. Acetaminophen acts as a pain reliever and fever reducer, while butalbital is a barbiturate that works by relaxing muscle contractions and promoting a sense of calm. Caffeine is included to help stimulate the central nervous system and improve the effectiveness of the other components by enhancing blood flow. This medication is typically reserved for tension headaches that have not responded to over-the-counter options. Because butalbital can be habit-forming and may cause drowsiness, it is often classified as a controlled substance and should be used strictly according to a doctor's instructions. Patients are often advised to avoid alcohol and other sedatives while taking this medication due to the risk of increased side effects and central nervous system depression.
