About Gatifloxacin Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%
What is this medication? Gatifloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.5 percent is an antibiotic eye drop used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis. As a member of the fluoroquinolone class of drugs, it works by killing the bacteria responsible for causing pink eye. It helps reduce common symptoms including redness, swelling, tearing, and crusting around the eyelids that often accompany these types of ocular infections.
This medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria through the inhibition of enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA synthesis. It is important to use the drops exactly as directed by a doctor and to finish the entire prescribed amount even if symptoms improve quickly. It is intended for topical use in the eyes only and should not be used for infections caused by viruses or fungi.
