About Gazyva
What is this medication? Gazyva, also known by its generic name obinutuzumab, is a prescription intravenous medication classified as a monoclonal antibody. It is primarily used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and certain types of follicular lymphoma. In the treatment of CLL, it is typically prescribed in combination with chlorambucil for patients who have not previously received treatment. For follicular lymphoma, it is often used alongside other chemotherapy drugs for patients whose cancer has returned or did not respond to prior therapies.
The medication works by specifically targeting a protein called CD20, which is found on the surface of B-cell lymphocytes. By attaching to these proteins, Gazyva helps the immune system identify and destroy the cancerous B-cells while also directly causing the cells to break down. This targeted approach is designed to slow the progression of the disease and help manage symptoms associated with these types of blood and lymph node cancers.
