About Glycine
What is this medication? Glycine is a sterile, non-pyrogenic irrigation solution used primarily during urological surgical procedures, such as a transurethral resection of the prostate or other transurethral electrosurgical operations. It is designed to be used as a washing and rinsing fluid to help clear the surgical field of blood and tissue debris. This allows the surgeon to maintain a clear view of the bladder and urethra during the operation. Unlike many other solutions, it is intended specifically for irrigation of body cavities and is not meant for intravenous injection or oral consumption. The medication is particularly useful in electrosurgery because it is a non-conducting solution, meaning it does not carry an electric current. This property is environment-essential when using high-frequency electrical instruments to ensure that the current remains focused on the targeted tissue rather than being dispersed through the surrounding fluid. Additionally, glycine is non-hemolytic, which helps prevent the rapid breakdown of red blood cells if the solution is absorbed into the bloodstream through opened vessels during the procedure. This helps minimize certain systemic complications that can occur during these types of surgeries.
