About Guanfacine
What is this medication? Guanfacine is a prescription medication primarily used to treat two distinct conditions. In its extended-release form, it is frequently prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents, either as a standalone treatment or alongside stimulant medications. It works by affecting receptors in the brain to help improve focus, reduce impulsivity, and manage hyperactivity.
In its immediate-release form, the drug is also utilized to treat hypertension, which is high blood pressure. By stimulating specific receptors in the brain, it signals the heart to beat more slowly and blood vessels to relax, allowing blood to flow more easily. Because it can cause side effects like drowsiness or a drop in blood pressure, it is important to take it exactly as directed by a healthcare provider.
