About HELIUM

What is this medication? Helium is a medical grade gas that is most commonly administered in a mixture with oxygen, frequently referred to as heliox. This medication is primarily utilized to assist patients suffering from acute respiratory distress caused by conditions such as severe asthma, croup, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Because helium is much less dense than the nitrogen found in standard atmospheric air, the gas mixture flows through narrowed or obstructed airways with significantly less turbulence. This physical property reduces the physical work of breathing for the patient and helps maintain adequate oxygenation during a medical crisis.

The use of helium is typically restricted to hospital settings or emergency care environments where it serves as a temporary supportive measure. It is not a cure for underlying lung diseases but rather a tool to stabilize a patient while other treatments, such as inhaled bronchodilators or intravenous steroids, begin to work. Medical professionals monitor the administration closely using specialized delivery systems to ensure that the patient receives the proper ratio of helium to oxygen required for their specific clinical situation.
