What is this medication?

Helium and oxygen mixture 80/20, often referred to as heliox, is a medical gas composed of 80 percent helium and 20 percent oxygen. This specific blend is used to reduce the work of breathing in patients experiencing respiratory distress. Because helium is significantly less dense than the nitrogen found in standard room air, the mixture flows more easily through narrowed or obstructed airways. This lower density allows for more laminar, or smooth, airflow, which decreases the effort required by the lungs to move oxygen into the body.

Clinical applications for this medication typically include the management of acute upper airway obstructions, severe asthma attacks, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations. It is also frequently utilized in pediatric care for conditions like croup. While heliox does not treat the underlying cause of a respiratory condition, it serves as a critical supportive therapy to maintain ventilation and provide relief until other treatments, such as bronchodilators or steroids, can take effect.
