About Hydroxyzine
What is this medication? Hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine used primarily to treat symptoms of anxiety and tension. It is also commonly prescribed to relieve itching caused by allergic skin conditions, such as hives or contact dermatitis. Because it has calming effects on the central nervous system, it is frequently used as a non-habit-forming alternative to other types of anti-anxiety medications for short-term management. In addition to treating anxiety and skin irritation, hydroxyzine may be used as a sedative before or after surgery to help patients relax. It works by blocking the effects of histamine in the body while also decreasing activity in certain areas of the brain. Due to its sedative properties, it often causes sleepiness, which is why it is also sometimes used to help with sleep issues or to enhance the effects of other pain medications.
