About INVOKAMET, INVOKAMET XR

What is this medication?

Invokamet and Invokamet XR are combination prescription medicines used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. These medications contain two active ingredients, canagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride, which work in different ways to manage the condition. Canagliflozin helps the kidneys remove sugar from the blood through urine, while metformin decreases the amount of sugar made by the liver and helps the body respond better to insulin.

In addition to blood sugar management, these drugs are prescribed to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. They are also used to reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. While both medications contain the same active ingredients, the XR version is an extended-release formulation designed to be taken once daily to release the medication gradually into the system.
