About Isolyte S
What is this medication? Isolyte S is a prescription intravenous solution used to replace water and essential electrolytes in patients who are dehydrated or unable to maintain proper fluid balance. It contains a balanced mixture of sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate, which closely mimics the electrolyte composition of human blood plasma. This helps to restore normal physiological function by replenishing the extracellular fluid volume that may have been lost due to surgery, injury, or other medical conditions.
In addition to fluid resuscitation, Isolyte S is used to treat mild cases of metabolic acidosis. The acetate and gluconate components in the solution are metabolized by the body into bicarbonate, which helps to neutralize excess acid in the blood and restore a healthy pH balance. Because it is an isotonic solution, it provides a safe and effective way to deliver necessary minerals and hydration directly into the bloodstream without causing significant shifts in cellular water levels.
