About Isosorbide Mononitrate
What is this medication? Isosorbide mononitrate is a prescription medication belonging to a class of drugs called nitrates. It works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily to the heart muscle. By improving blood flow and reducing the amount of work the heart must do, this medication is primarily used to prevent chest pain, also known as angina, in patients with coronary artery disease.
This medication is intended for long-term, daily use to manage chronic heart conditions rather than for immediate relief of sudden symptoms. It is important to understand that isosorbide mononitrate will not stop an angina attack once it has already begun. Patients are typically advised to follow a specific dosing schedule to ensure the medication remains effective over time and to help prevent the body from building up a tolerance to its effects.
