About LEUCOVORIN CALCIUM
What is this medication? Leucovorin calcium is a medication that functions as a form of folic acid, also known as folinic acid. It is most commonly used as a rescue agent after treatment with the chemotherapy drug methotrexate to help prevent or decrease the severity of toxic side effects. By replenishing the body's folate levels, it protects healthy cells in the bone marrow and digestive tract from the damage that high doses of certain cancer medications can cause.
This medication is also used in combination with 5-fluorouracil to enhance the effectiveness of that drug in treating advanced colorectal cancer. Beyond its role in cancer therapy, leucovorin calcium may be prescribed to treat megaloblastic anemia when the condition is caused by a deficiency of folic acid. It works by providing the necessary nutrients for the production of healthy red blood cells when the body cannot obtain enough through diet or other supplements.
