About LIDOCAINE HCI
What is this medication? Lidocaine hydrochloride is a medication primarily used as a local anesthetic to cause a temporary loss of feeling or numbness in a specific area of the body. It works by blocking the nerve signals that send pain messages to the brain. This medication is commonly applied topically as a cream, gel, or patch to relieve pain from minor burns, insect bites, or skin irritations such as shingles. It is also frequently used by healthcare professionals before minor medical or dental procedures to numb the area being treated. Beyond its use for surface numbing, lidocaine hydrochloride is also available in an injectable form. In clinical settings, doctors may inject it into deeper tissues to provide local anesthesia for surgery or use it as a regional nerve block. Additionally, lidocaine is used intravenously in hospital settings to treat certain types of serious heart rhythm problems, known as ventricular arrhythmias. It helps stabilize the hearts electrical activity to restore a normal heartbeat.
