About Loestrin Fe 28 Day, Loestrin 21 Day

What is this medication? Loestrin Fe 28 Day and Loestrin 21 Day are combination hormonal birth control pills containing two female hormones, norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol. This medication is primarily used to prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries during the menstrual cycle. Additionally, it causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

While both versions serve the same contraceptive purpose, Loestrin 21 contains only active hormonal pills for three weeks, while Loestrin Fe 28 includes a final week of non-hormonal pills that contain ferrous fumarate, which is an iron supplement. Doctors may also prescribe these medications to help regulate menstrual cycles, treat severe acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts, and decrease menstrual blood loss or painful cramps. Consistent daily use is necessary to ensure the highest level of effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.
