About Lumason, LumaSon

What is this medication? Lumason is a diagnostic contrast agent used during ultrasound imaging procedures to help physicians obtain clearer and more detailed pictures of the body's internal structures. It is composed of sulfur hexafluoride lipid-type A microspheres, which are microscopic bubbles that reflect ultrasound waves. In adults, it is commonly used during echocardiograms to improve the visualization of the left ventricular endocardial border, making it easier for doctors to assess heart function when standard ultrasound images are not sufficiently clear.

Beyond heart imaging, this medication is used in both adult and pediatric patients to help characterize focal liver lesions. By enhancing the contrast of the liver, it allows for a more accurate assessment of potential abnormalities. In children, it is also indicated for use in voiding ultrasonography to evaluate the urinary tract for vesicoureteral reflux. This helps medical professionals diagnose conditions more effectively using ultrasound technology rather than relying on methods that involve ionizing radiation.
