About Magnesium Sulfate
What is this medication? Magnesium sulfate is a naturally occurring mineral and electrolyte used in clinical settings to treat several serious medical conditions. In obstetrics, it is frequently administered intravenously to prevent or treat seizures associated with preeclampsia and eclampsia during pregnancy or immediately following childbirth. Additionally, it may be used for fetal neuroprotection to reduce the risk of cerebral palsy in infants born prematurely.
Beyond maternal health, this medication serves as a critical treatment for severe magnesium deficiency, known as hypomagnesemia, and as an intervention for certain life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias such as torsades de pointes. It is also sometimes utilized in emergency departments to help manage severe acute asthma attacks when other standard treatments have failed. Depending on the condition, it works by relaxing smooth muscle tissue and stabilizing electrical activity in the nervous system and heart.
