About Methylene Blue

What is this medication?

Methylene blue is a medication primarily used to treat a serious blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia. In this condition, the iron in hemoglobin is altered so that it cannot effectively carry and release oxygen to the body's tissues, leading to symptoms like blue-tinted skin, shortness of breath, and fatigue. When administered intravenously, methylene blue works by acting as an electron donor that converts the abnormal methemoglobin back into functional hemoglobin, restoring the blood's ability to transport oxygen properly.

Beyond its role in treating blood disorders, methylene blue serves several other clinical purposes. It is frequently used as a diagnostic dye during surgical procedures to help doctors identify specific tissues, visualize the urinary tract, or detect leaks in certain organs. Additionally, it has historical use as an antiseptic and is sometimes employed in the management of specific types of poisoning or life-threatening low blood pressure when other treatments have failed. Due to its potent chemical properties, it must be administered under strict medical supervision to monitor for potential side effects and drug interactions.
