What is this medication?

Milnacipran hydrochloride, commonly known by the brand name Savella, is a prescription medication primarily used for the management of fibromyalgia in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs. Although some medications in this class are used to treat depression or anxiety, Savella is specifically approved in the United States for the treatment of the chronic pain and physical symptoms associated with fibromyalgia rather than psychiatric conditions.

The medication works by increasing the activity of two chemical messengers in the brain and spinal cord known as serotonin and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are believed to play a significant role in how the central nervous system processes and suppresses pain signals. By improving the balance of these chemicals, Savella helps to reduce the widespread muscle pain, stiffness, and fatigue that characterize fibromyalgia. It is typically taken twice daily and is usually started at a low dose that is gradually increased over time.
