About Nafcillin
What is this medication?
Nafcillin is a prescription antibiotic that belongs to the class of medications known as penicillinase-resistant penicillins. It is primarily used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by specific strains of staphylococci, commonly referred to as staph infections. This medication works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and is particularly effective against organisms that produce an enzyme called penicillinase, which normally breaks down other types of penicillin.
Healthcare providers typically administer nafcillin in a hospital or clinical setting through an injection into a muscle or an intravenous infusion into a vein. It is frequently prescribed for conditions such as endocarditis, bone infections, pneumonia, and bloodstream infections. Because it is an antibiotic, it is only effective against bacterial infections and will not work for viral illnesses such as the common cold or flu.
