About NARCAN

What is this medication? NARCAN is a medication used for the emergency treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose. It contains the drug naloxone, which acts as an opioid antagonist to block the effects of substances like fentanyl, heroin, and prescription painkillers on the central nervous system. When administered during an overdose, it works quickly to restore normal breathing in individuals who have experienced life-threatening respiratory depression.

It is important to seek immediate medical help after using this medication because its effects are temporary. Since the opioids may stay in the body longer than the naloxone, a person could potentially slip back into an overdose state once the medication wears off. NARCAN is specifically designed for use in emergencies and can be administered by individuals without formal medical training to help save lives while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
