About Neomycin Sulfate
What is this medication? Neomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic primarily used to reduce the number of bacteria in the intestines. When taken orally, it is not well absorbed into the bloodstream, which allows it to target bacteria within the digestive tract effectively. One of its most common uses is as a bowel preparation treatment before surgery to prevent infections during and after the procedure. It may also be used in topical forms for skin infections, though its oral form is specifically known for its intestinal applications.
Another significant use of oral neomycin sulfate is in the management of hepatic coma, also known as portal-systemic encephalopathy. In patients with severe liver disease, certain bacteria in the gut produce ammonia, which can build up in the blood and affect brain function. By suppressing these bacteria, neomycin helps lower ammonia levels and improve the patient's mental state. It is important to use this medication only for bacterial infections, as it will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
