About Nucala
What is this medication? Nucala is a prescription biologic medication, known generically as mepolizumab, that is primarily used as an add-on maintenance treatment for people with severe eosinophilic asthma. It works by targeting and reducing the levels of eosinophils, which are a type of white blood cell that can cause inflammation in the lungs and airways when present in high amounts. By lowering these levels, the medication helps to prevent severe asthma attacks and improve overall breathing for patients who do not get enough relief from their regular asthma medicines alone.
In addition to treating asthma, Nucala is used to manage several other conditions characterized by high eosinophil levels. These include chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults, as well as rarer conditions such as eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis and hypereosinophilic syndrome. The medication is administered as an injection under the skin every four weeks, either by a healthcare professional or through a self-injection device at home after proper training. It is not intended for use in treating sudden breathing problems or acute asthma attacks.
