What is this medication?

Oxygen/Helium 25/75, commonly referred to as heliox, is a specialized medical gas mixture used to treat patients who are experiencing significant respiratory distress due to narrowed or obstructed airways. This mixture contains twenty-five percent oxygen and seventy-five percent helium. The therapeutic advantage of this combination lies in the physical properties of helium, which is significantly less dense than the nitrogen normally found in the atmosphere. Because the gas is lighter, it flows through constricted respiratory passages with less turbulence, making it easier for a patient to breathe.

This medication is primarily used in hospital settings for individuals suffering from conditions such as severe asthma attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations, or upper airway obstructions like croup. It is administered through specialized delivery systems, such as a tight-fitting mask or a ventilator, to ensure the correct concentration is maintained.
