What is this medication?

Oxygen-helium mixture, often referred to as heliox, is a medical gas used to assist patients experiencing difficulty breathing due to upper airway obstructions or severe respiratory conditions. By replacing the nitrogen found in normal air with helium, which is significantly less dense, the mixture flows more easily through narrowed breathing passages. This reduction in density decreases the work of breathing, allowing oxygen to reach the lungs with less physical effort from the patient.

Healthcare providers typically use this medication in clinical settings for conditions such as acute asthma attacks, croup, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is often employed as a bridge therapy while other treatments, like steroids or bronchodilators, take effect.
