About PANRETIN
What is this medication? Panretin is a topical gel that contains the active ingredient alitretinoin, which belongs to a class of medications known as retinoids. This prescription drug is specifically indicated for the local treatment of skin lesions in patients with AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma. It is typically prescribed when these cutaneous lesions are not extensive and do not require systemic chemotherapy or radiation therapy to manage. The medication works by binding to specific receptors in the body that control cell growth and differentiation, which helps to shrink or eliminate the cancerous skin spots. Patients apply the gel directly to the affected areas of the skin as directed by their healthcare professional. It is important to understand that while Panretin treats the visible skin lesions, it does not cure Kaposi sarcoma or the underlying HIV infection.
