About Pegasys

What is this medication? Pegasys is an injectable prescription medicine that contains the active ingredient peginterferon alfa-2a. It is primarily used to treat chronic hepatitis C and chronic hepatitis B, which are viral infections that cause inflammation and damage to the liver. For hepatitis C, it is often prescribed for adults with compensated liver disease and is frequently used in combination with other antiviral medications. For hepatitis B, it can be used in both adults and children who show evidence of viral replication and liver inflammation.

The medication functions by mimicking the actions of natural interferons, which are proteins the body produces to fight off viral invaders. By enhancing the immune system response and interfering with the ability of the virus to reproduce, Pegasys helps to decrease the viral load in a patient's system. It is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection once per week, and the duration of treatment varies depending on the specific type of virus and the patient's individual response to the drug.
