About PHENTOLAMINE MESYLATE
What is this medication? Phentolamine mesylate is a prescription medication primarily used to prevent and control high blood pressure in patients with a rare adrenal gland tumor called pheochromocytoma. It is often administered before or during surgical procedures to remove these tumors, as the surgery can cause sudden, dangerous spikes in blood pressure. The drug works as an alpha-adrenergic blocker, which means it helps relax and widen blood vessels to improve blood flow and keep pressure within a safe range.
In addition to its use for adrenal tumors, this medication is frequently employed to treat or prevent skin and tissue damage caused by the leakage of certain intravenous drugs. If potent vasoconstrictors like norepinephrine accidentally escape from a vein into the surrounding tissue during an infusion, phentolamine mesylate can be injected into the site to reverse the constriction and prevent tissue death. It is also sometimes used in dental settings to help reverse the numbing effects of local anesthesia more quickly after a procedure is completed.
