What is this medication?

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, known by the brand name IMMPHENTIV, is a medication classified as an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist. It is primarily used to increase blood pressure in adult patients who experience hypotension, or low blood pressure, during the administration of anesthesia. This is particularly common in surgical settings, such as during a cesarean section or other major operations, where maintaining stable blood pressure is critical for patient safety and organ perfusion.

The medication functions by stimulating specific receptors on the walls of blood vessels, causing them to constrict. This narrowing of the vessels increases systemic vascular resistance, which in turn raises the patient's blood pressure to a more normal and stable range.
