About Prepidil
What is this medication?
Prepidil is a prescription medication used to prepare the cervix for the induction of labor in pregnant women who are at or near their delivery date. It contains the active ingredient dinoprostone, which is a naturally occurring substance known as a prostaglandin. When applied to the cervix, the gel helps to soften, thin, and dilate the cervical opening, a process often referred to as cervical ripening. This preparation is typically necessary when a healthcare provider determines that labor needs to be started for medical reasons but the cervix is not yet ready for the birth process.
The medication is administered as an endocervical gel by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinical setting. Once applied, the patient is usually required to remain lying down for a short period to ensure the medication stays in place and begins working effectively. Throughout the process, both the mother and the baby are closely monitored for heart rate and uterine activity to ensure safety. By ripening the cervix, Prepidil increases the likelihood of a successful vaginal delivery and can help reduce the total time needed for the labor induction process.
