About Probenecid
Probenecid is a prescription medication primarily used to treat chronic gout and gouty arthritis. It works by helping the kidneys eliminate excess uric acid from the body through the urine. By lowering the levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, the medication prevents the formation of painful crystals in the joints. This medication is also frequently used in combination with certain antibiotics, such as penicillin, to enhance their effectiveness by slowing their removal from the body. Probenecid is meant for long-term prevention and should not be used to treat a sudden, acute gout attack; patients must maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent the formation of uric acid kidney stones.
