What is this medication? Provocholine, also known by its generic name methacholine chloride, is a diagnostic medication used to help healthcare providers determine if a patient has bronchial airway hyperreactivity. Unlike most respiratory drugs, it is not used to treat a condition but is instead administered during a medical procedure called a methacholine challenge test. This medication is specifically intended for individuals who have symptoms suggestive of asthma, such as wheezing or shortness of breath, but who have produced normal results on standard breathing tests like spirometry.

During the diagnostic procedure, the medication is inhaled in increasing concentrations to see if it triggers the narrowing of the airways. A positive result occurs when a specific dose causes a significant decrease in lung function, indicating that the patient's airways are more sensitive than normal.
