About RADICAVA, RADICAVA ORS

What is this medication?

RADICAVA and RADICAVA ORS are prescription medications containing the active ingredient edaravone, which is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. These medications function as antioxidants and are designed to help slow the loss of physical function in individuals diagnosed with this neurodegenerative condition. While Radicava is administered through an intravenous infusion, Radicava ORS provides an oral option that can be taken by mouth or through a feeding tube.

The medication works by acting as a free radical scavenger, which helps to minimize oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress is believed to play a significant role in the damage and eventual death of motor neurons, which are the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. By protecting these neurons, RADICAVA and RADICAVA ORS aim to preserve everyday functional abilities, such as walking, dressing, and speaking, for a longer period of time compared to those not taking the treatment.
