About RISPERDAL, RISPERDAL M-TAB

What is this medication?

Risperdal and Risperdal M-TAB are brand names for the prescription medication risperidone, which belongs to a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics. This medication is primarily used to treat mental and mood disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In patients with schizophrenia, it helps to decrease hallucinations and improve the ability to think clearly and participate in everyday life. For individuals with bipolar disorder, it is used to treat acute manic or mixed episodes, helping to stabilize severe mood swings and behavior.

Additionally, Risperdal is used to treat irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents. This includes symptoms like aggression towards others, deliberate self-injury, and temper tantrums. The medication works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain, specifically dopamine and serotonin. While the standard Risperdal comes in tablet or liquid form, the M-TAB version is an orally disintegrating tablet that dissolves quickly on the tongue, which can be helpful for patients who have trouble swallowing traditional pills.
